Rosneft Continues Research under the Biodiversity Conservation Programme

13 September 2024

A scientific expedition to study birds in Taymyr was launched with Rosneft's support. Scientists will conduct comprehensive aerial surveys of the inner delta of the Yenisei (Brekhovsky Islands), as well as the coasts and large islands of the Yenisei Bay.

The research is being carried out as part of Rosneft's biodiversity conservation programme called Tamura. The Arctic Research Centre of the Company implements the programme. As part of the programme, studies of wild reindeer population and Kara subpopulation of polar bears on the Taimyr Peninsula and fish in the Yenisei River estuary are planned between 2024 and 2027. There will be ten expeditions in total over four years.

The main goal of the expedition is to assess the significance of the Yenisei River delta for waterfowl and semiaquatic birds during their autumn migration and migration stops, including the Red Book species - Red-breasted Goose and Bewick's Swan. The deltas of large rivers are traditionally the most important areas of bird concentration during migration. However, there are no current data on the fauna, abundance and distribution of birds at these sites. As a result, the beginning phase of aerial research on the Brekhovsky Islands is particularly relevant.

A specially equipped laboratory plane will fly over the most favourable areas for migration stops as part of the expedition. Scientists will take photographs of all birds spotted along the route. Based on the obtained data, the number and species composition of flocks and individuals and their nesting coordinates will be clarified. This will provide a comprehensive view of the fauna and distribution of birds in the area.

After completion of the work on the Brekhovsky Islands, the research will focus on the shores of the Yenisei Bay. The main focus here will be the coastal zone - its geomorphological structure and features of coastal scarps. Scientists will also focus on marine mammals and birds during the coastal survey.

This season, scientists have already conducted field work to study birds on the Brekhovsky Islands. Specialists have crossed more than 400 kilometres in search of rare bird species listed in the Red Book. In addition, research expeditions to study wild reindeer and polar bears were launched in July and August as part of the Tamura programme.

Rosneft is committed to environment-oriented campaigns and biodiversity preservation activities. Arctic Research Centre implements the most ambitious program for studying the Arctic region since Soviet times. More than 50 expeditions have already been carried out over 12 years, during which scientists have studied hydrometeorological, geological and biological peculiarities of the region. It has been the source of a unique body of information on Arctic climate, nature and wildlife.
