Bashneft Releases 570,000 Fry into Water Bodies

08 August 2022

In July 2022, Bashneft (part of Rosneft) released over 570,000 fry of valuable fish species into water bodies of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District.

Preserving the environment for future generations is one of the key areas of Rosneft's development strategy. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production and implements several comprehensive programmes for the preservation and restoration of natural resources.

In July, Bashneft employees released 339,000 peled fry into the rivers of the Ob-Irtysh basin in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District. Company employees released 231,000 red-listed sterlet and common carp fry into the Belaya River in the Republic of Bashkortostan, as well as into the Nizhnekamskoye water reservoir in the Republic of Tatarstan.

The Tyumen branch of the Russian Federal Research Institute Of Fisheries and Oceanography and the Holy Virgin Monastery of Kazan were the main suppliers of valuable fish fry.

The sterlet fry gained the required weight of 3 grams in a favourable natural environment with an abundant food supply. The fry were transported to their new habitats by specially equipped vehicles.

All fry releases were controlled by representatives of the territorial offices of the Federal Agency for Fishery, which determine specific water bodies and locations for the fry releases. Water bodies are selected based on optimal conditions for breeding and recovery of the population. According to the agency's experts, artificial stocking helps to maintain the ecological balance of water bodies, and the raised fish adapt well in open water.

Note for Editors:

Ecosystem and biodiversity protection and the replenishment of natural resources is an important part of Bashneft's environmental programme. In 2021, Bashneft released more than 672,000 fry of valuable fish species into water bodies of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Perm Territory, Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Districts.

Also in 2021, Bashneft carried out the largest landscaping campaign in the last 20 years: more than 3.6 million seedlings of conifers were planted in the regions where it operates, covering an area of more than 900 hectares. The largest planting campaign was carried out in Bashkortostan: during the spring and summer of 2021, oil workers planted 3.1 million fir and pine trees on an area of 722 hectares in 17 districts of the Republic.
