Green Investments of Rosneft’s Samara Group of Enterprises Reach more than 4.5 Billion Roubles in 2020

24 March 2021

Enterprises of Rosneft Oil Company’s Samara group--Samaraneftegaz, the Novokuibyshevsk, Syzran and Kuibyshev refineries, Novokuibyshevsk Petrochemical Company and Oil and Additives Plant--allocated over 4.5 billion roubles for environmental protection activities in 2020.

The Company’s enterprises in the region are undergoing a large-scale reconstruction aimed at modernising process equipment, increasing the depth of oil refining and ensuring environmental safety. A comprehensive modernisation programme for existing facilities is being implemented to enable green derivatives production.

Motor fuels from the Syzran, Kuibyshev and Novokuibyshevsk refineries comply with the highest environmental standard Euro-5. New highly environmentally friendly marine fuel RMLS 40 production has been launched at the Syzran refinery and TMS type A fuel production at the Novokuibyshevsk refinery in 2020. Both oil products quality is fully compliant with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

The integrated environmental programme implemented at the plants is aimed at reducing the environmental impact, increasing the reliability of equipment and pipelines, the rational use of resources, land reclamation and the replenishment of biological resources.

Samaraneftegaz implemented projects to reconstruct, diagnose and inhibit the pipeline fleet and completely stopped taking water from surface water bodies for re-injection. Innovative and resource-saving technologies are being introduced at the refineries and petrochemical plants of the Samara group, and treatment facilities and water recycling systems are being reconstructed. Annual water intake from natural sources is decreasing, with the use of recycled water increasing. In recent years, this figure has risen to 95%.

Great attention is paid to the condition of atmospheric air and 24-hour environmental monitoring in the production facilities areas. Refineries have equipped tanks with special pontoons, which has significantly reduced the evaporation of petroleum products from the surface. Stationary and mobile eco-posts equipped with modern high-precision equipment are functioning in the sanitary protection zones of the Kuibyshev, Syzran and Novokuibyshevsk refineries, analysing the state of atmospheric air on a continuous basis.

Recycling and safe disposal of industrial waste is an important area of focus. Samaraneftegaz has commissioned four sites to process hydrocarbon-rich soils. Unique technology makes it possible to recycle oily waste from additive manufacturing into marketable products at the Novokuibyshevsk lubricants and additives plant.

The Company’s enterprises were among the first in the Samara region to organise a separate collection of plastic and waste paper. Dozens of tonnes of waste are sent for recycling.

Environmental volunteering is an integral part of the ongoing environmental projects of the Samara Group. In 2020, the Company’s employees carried out a campaign to study natural sources of natural water and improve springs and regularly organised green clean-up works. A total of about 1,000 tonnes of litter was collected, with more than 188,000 square metres of municipality and coastal areas cleaned. Rosneft’s enterprises replenished aquatic bioresources by releasing 900,000 fish fry, including sturgeon fry, into the waters of the Volga and rivers of the Volga basin.

Note for Editors:

The Samara Region is one of the key regions of Rosneft’s operations. The Samara Group pursues a consistent and environmentally responsible policy aimed at protecting the environment and making rational use of natural resources. The effectiveness of enterprises in the area of environmental safety has repeatedly been recognised at regional and national levels in the regional EcoLeader competition and the federal Leader of Environmental Protection in Russia competition.
